Was this a case of benign neglect, or were there important steps taken across the Atlantic which facilitated the deepening, and paving the way for the later widening, of the EU? What does the relative absence or presence of transatlantic consensus in the 1980s tell us about the nature of the post-war (i.e. 1989) relationship and the nature of international order itself? CONF	27-29 May 2010	University of Freiburg	"Making Europe, The Global Origins of the Old World". This conference will argue, in contrast to much of the existing literature, that much of what is allegedly distinctly "European" is the result of interactions between particular European regions and other parts of the world. It will show that the efforts to write a history of Europe confined to its own ill-defined boundaries might serve particular political needs of the contemporary moment, but is, in fact, historically inaccurate. Young scientists are going to work in different forms under the guidance of acknowledged human science specialists from Germany and Poland. Therefore, we invite young scientists specializing in any discipline of human science. To emphasise its interdisciplinary character, not only graduates in strictly historical disciplines, but also sociologists, political scientists, theologians, philologists and art historians are welcome to take part in the college. All the costs of the participation are covered by the organizers. Also the travel costs can be partly remunerated. Although PhD studies are not obligatory, the candidate shall lead a permanent scientific activity and be able to discuss scientific matters either in Polish, in German or in English.
