DESCRIPTION:CALL FOR PAPERS\nInternational workshop\nDepartment of Politica
 l Sciences\, Law and International Studies\nPadua (Italy)\, 17-18 January
2013\nDeadline: 31 July 2012\n\nItalian protest movements and their intern
ational dimension after 1968:\na comparative historical approach\n\nThe ch
air of History of Italian foreign policy - Department of Political \nScien
ces\, Law and\nInternational Studies (University of Padua) invite scholars
to submit \nresearch paper proposals\ndealing with the International poli
tical culture of protest actors from \nthe late 1960s to the 1980s.\nDurin
g the second half of the 1960s\, among the younger generations – \nespecia
lly in the Western\nworld – there appeared a growing consciousness of the
 dramatic changes \nwhich were\ncharacterizing the international situation\
, as well as of the economic \nand social changes that had\nshaped their c
ountries. The protest movements in the US and in Western \nEurope had as p
rimary\ntargets of their activities\, not only their own governments\, but
also \ntheir foreign policies. The\nprotest against US involvement in Vie
tnam shaped the second half of the \n1960s and the first half of\nthe 1970
s and\, although local Western Communist parties played an \nimportant rol
 e in organizing\nmanifestations (e.g. pro North Vietnam campaigns)\, the i
mpact was wider \nand deeper than what\nthe Communist parties could achiev
 e. Moreover the Vietnam war was not \nthe only international\nissue which
characterised the interest of the protest movements and \ntheir initiative
s involved\nopposition to other forms of western “imperialism”\, the activ
ities \nnon-governmental bodies such\nas the multinationals\, the survival
of fascist regimes in Europe (e.g. \nSpain and Portugal) or the\ncreation
of right-wing military regimes in Europe and in Latin America \n(e.g. Gre
ece and Chile)\,\nneo-colonialism\, etc.\n\nMoreover some protest movement
s bordered or had some contacts with \nminority groups which\nadvocated vi
olent forms of “resistance” against “international \nimperialism” and terr
orist\norganizations were active in various parts of the world and develop
ed \nsome cooperation.\nLast but not least\, during the 1970s and the earl
y 1980s\, also as a \nconsequence of the economic\ncrisis and of the growi
ng consciousness of the environmental problems \nposed by previous\neconom
ic growth\, protest movements began to focus their attention on \nissues s
uch as pollution\,\nthe consequence of the exploitation of nuclear energy\
, etc.\nNew political actors emerged in the international arena\, constitu
ting a \nwatershed in terms of\npolitical and cultural identities\, as wel
l as new ways to do politics.\nThe workshop aims at analysing the internat
ional political culture of \nprotest actors that emerged in\nthe period be
tween the late 1960s and the early 1980s\, focusing on the \nItalian case
but also on\nEuropean and non-European study cases\, in a comparative pers
pective.\nThe initiative\, pursued by the Department of Political Sciences
\, Law and \nInternational Studies of\nthe University of Padua\, is the se
cond event of a wider project which \naims at networking junior\nand senio
r scholars who are working on such a topic.\n\nThe network already include
s scholars from the University of Bologna – \nForlì\, the University of\nA
ugsburg\, the New York University\, SciencesPo Paris\, LUISS University
Rome and IMT Lucca\,\nBruno Kessler Foundation Trento\, Gramsci Institute
 Rome\, European \nUniversity Institute Florence\,\nand the University of P
adua.\n\nThe working languages will be English and Italian.\n\nThe Scienti
fic Committee is committed to the publication of papers’ \nselection\, bas
ed on scientific\ncriteria.\n\nApplicants should submit to valentine.lomel
 lini@unipd.it and \nantonio.varsori@unipd.it by 31 July\n2012\, a single W
ord or PDF file containing 400-word (about 2000 \ncharacters) abstract of
the\nproposed research paper and a brief academic CV. Please\, remember to
\nhighlight your email\naddress on the top of your CV.\n\nThe file should
be titled: “Your Name Padua workshop 2013”.\n\nNotification of acceptance
will be made by 15 September 2012.\n\nSuccessful applicants will be expec
ted to email their papers by 15 \nNovember 2012.\nThe Organization will pr
