"The Legacy and Memory of Communism in Europe". Workshop organised
by EURHISTXX, European Network on Contemporary History (GDRE-CNRS). This
workshop would like to propose a discussion on how to evaluate what
remains alive, what has been forgotten or ignored about this central
experience of the 20th century, in European politics and societies. It
focuses less on the history of Communism as such than on its memory and
legacy within European societies since 1989. It will analyze the split
between Eastern and Western perceptions about Communism as a historical
process or the differences inside each former "block". It doesn't want
to pay attention only to the traumatic memories, but to all the form of
remembering and representation of the past, including nostalgia,

stereotypical interpretation of a totally negative presence of the UK in
Europe, the conference will provide a new interpretation of the end of
bipolarity on both sides of the Iron Curtain in Europe. This
interpretation will reveal the existence of a link connecting British
policy towards the Community with the interest of the Thatcher's
governments to strengthen relations with Eastern Europe and to open a
dialogue with Gorbachev in view of his role in Europe and in the
triangular relation With the US. The conference will end with a
round-table which will place a Strong emphasis on the non-governmental
initiatives of UK groups and Institutions operating to the advantage of
the cause of social and cultural liberalisation in Eastern Europe.

«Les interactions culturelles et la résolution des conflits dans la
zone Euromed». Cet événement est le fruit du travail du CADMOS (Centre
d'Analyse des Différends et de leurs Modes de Solution, Paris XI), en
association avec le Master «Diplomatie et Négociations Stratégiques».
Tenue en Alexandrie, les 14 et 15 juin, la simulation de négociations
est animée par les étudiants qui endossent, chacun, le rôle d'un État.
Elle se déroulera sous le regard d'observateurs internationaux venus de
France, du Maghreb et du Proche-Orient. Pendant la simulation les
étudiants vont aborder le thème de la crise au sein de l'espace Euromed,
et ce à travers l'angle culturel. Il s'agit d'une façon d'aller au coeur
des conflits en faisant du dialogue culturel un outil de prévention, de
gestion et de résolution des crises. La journée du 16 juin sera

l'espressione forse più frequentemente usata per evocare quel vasto e

l'intensificarsi del processo di integrazione economica con la
salvaguardia delle essenziali funzioni di coesione e protezione sociale

Vecchio Continente. Iscrivendosi nell'ambito delle iniziative per la

"Europa in kommunistischen Zeiten: Zeitzeugen - Mythos -
Erinnerung". Die Konferenz steht im Kontext des von der
Volkswagen-Stiftung geförderten ZZF-Forschungsprojektes "Europa im
Ostblock - Vorstellungswelten und Kommunikationsräume im Wandel" (Martin
Sabrow, José Faraldo), das einem kulturhistorischen Ansatz folgt. Im
Mittelpunkt der Konferenz steht die Auseinandersetzung mit den
Europavorstellungen auf der östlichen Seite des Eisernen Vorhangs
zwischen 1945 und 1991. Aus einer heutigen Perspektive sollen
insbesondere Wahrnehmungen Europas von damaligen politischen und
publizistischen Akteuren und Wissenschaftlern kritisch reflektiert und

"Sushi in Rome. On travelling objects to and from Europe since 1945"
(IFK, International Research Center for Cultural Studies). When objects
mostly goods in an economic sense travel across national and cultural
borders, they become part of new frames in ways that will affect
enterprises, people, politics, tradition, media, and the arts. Such
globalisation processes on the level of material culture can only be
described in transdisciplinary ways. At the conference, the economics
and semiotics of material culture transfers will be discussed with a
focus on their representation in the media and their reflection in the
arts. Within the longstanding debate about globalization, the prime role
of the humanities consists in developing analytical categories for the
