31 May 2008 7 March 2009, The Hague (The Netherlands) "The First World War and the End of Neutrality". In recent historiography neutrality in Europe and the United States moved between the often frightening possibility of an involuntary violation of neutrality (viz. Belgium and Greece) and the prospect of a voluntary abandonment of neutrality when it was deemed incompatible with the national interest (viz. the United States, Italy and Romania). Moreover, as traditional legal and moral conceptions of neutrality lost their meaning, others supplanted them. The question of the decline or transformation of neutrality will form the subject of a conference to be held at The Hague, March 7th, 2009.

Topics: Now that much of post-Communist Europe is part of the EU, should we expect to see some changes in terms of how civil society works? Should we expect civil society to be transformed from the one supporting its members to assisting institutional change? Should we also aspire new forms of social capital to slowly emerge that are less determined by structural constraints of the political regime, but rather by individual choice? Do these circumstances in the EU-15 differ from the 'new outsiders' with respect to potential developments in social capital and civil society? This conference will address this new relationship between civil society and social capital in post-enlargement Central and Eastern Europe. The conference discussion will run along three analytical axes: 1. Path Dependency -- Rational Choice approaches 2. Utilitarian -- Idealistic explanations 3. domestic -- international factors The conference organizers call for papers concerning civil society and social capital in Central and Eastern Europe that fit along at least one axis. 15 February 2008 University of Amsterdam, 25 April 2008 "Nationalism and Communism". After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 nationalism suddenly resurfaced in Eastern Europe, or so the common wisdom goes. This implies communism and nationalism have little to do with each other. In reality, the communist regimes of Europe all flew the national flag in order to gain popular legitimacy.

31 January 2008 15-17 June 2009 (Imshausen) "The Heart of Europe: The Power of Faith, Vision and Belonging in European Unification". 2009 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Adam von Trott. Today he is often seen as the one of the most gifted thinkers on foreign affairs to have worked within the German resistance against Nazism. The Adam von Trott Foundation wishes to call together scholars from across Europe to discuss these, and associated themes at a conference at Imshausen, the von Trott's former manor house, on 15-17 June 2009. The aim of this conference is not so much to look at the formal politics of institutions, as to explore the ideals and visions which inform the history, and future, of European integration.

31 january 2008 Lisbon, 12-14 May 2008 "Europe in Black and White". Europe in black and white intends to address conflicting definitions of what "Europe" was, is and should be. We depart from the assumption that postcolonial Europe cannot ignore colonial histories on a national and transnational level. Thus there is the need to redefine priorities and identities in an increasingly multicultural space, taking at the same time into account the virulent conflicts that permeate contemporary interactions that cannot be understood as a mere "clash of civilizations" but rather as complex sites of conviviality (Gilroy), contact zones (Pratt), in which the unevenness of former dependencies are prolonged and contested.

16 January 2008 Berlin 24-27 April 2008 "PhD Researchers Conference: Ruptures and Continuities in European History (16th - 20th Centuries)". The Berlin conference is the second in a series of annual Graduate Conferences in European History (GRACEH) conducted by three established historical research institutes: the BKVGE, the Central European University (CEU), and the European University Institute (EUI). 15 janvier 2008 Université de Cergy-Pontoise, 9, 10 et 11 octobre 2008 «Lendemains de guerre.
